PRODUCERS FROM CAMPANIA: Boccella BACK TO REGIONS PAGE
  The Boccella family

Like so many people who stay close to their roots in southern Italy, the Boccella family the live in close proximity to one another - all in a family compound housing Raffaele and his brother, Giovanni; their wives (who are sisters); their children; and of course the sons' parents. They own a few hectares of land on a steep hillside facing the famed Molettieri property. Grapes are just one of the crops. The family grows and raises the vast majority of their food and drink, all of it organically.

Raffaele Boccella is the winemaker of the family, and on these few hectares he grows Aglianico plus a tad of Fiano. But the story here is red.

Boccella's are beautiful examples of mountain (as opposed to the softer, fruit-forward coastal) Aglianicos. The wines are big, powerful and full of strong tannins that need the rounding influence of oak. They take a bit of time to come around and open up.

People have been saying for a while that Aglianico was going to be Italy's next classic red. With Boccella there is no doubt that the time has arrived.
