Piemonte is the premier wine region of Italy. Nebbiolo is celebrated in Italy and abroad as the noblest grape of them all, and the effect of this celebration is the high price of most of the wines produced in Alba, Asti, Cuneo and other prized zones. Barolo, Barbaresco and even the humbler Barbera – the three B's are the iconic wines of an iconic region, and are often venerated in an almost fetishistic way.
Yet there's more to Piemonte than Nebbiolo and its grand "B" names. The region boasts a rich amphelography, such as Bonarda, localized Moscatos, Arneis, Grignolino and Freisa. These are lovely wines for everyday drinking, which is not to relegate them to also-ran status. Anzi. (Anything but.) It makes them all the more valuable because they are both affordable and versatile.
